# Replacement chest at 48"W x 27"H x 16"D — shortlist + clearance maths (25 Oct 2026)

## First, the size reading
Read as **48" wide x 27" high x 16" deep** — that is an actual product class (a low 6-drawer double
dresser), and the numbers line up with the one piece that matches exactly (47.5 x 26.85 x 15.5). Read the
other way (48 W x 27 D x 16 H) **nothing retail exists** — 27" deep is deeper than any 48"-wide chest on
the Canadian market, and I checked Canadian Tire, Home Depot and IKEA. So the wide/low reading is the one
that matches a real replacement.

## The shortlist
**1. Prepac Astrid 6-Drawer Dresser — the only exact-size match**
- **47.5"W x 26.85"H x 15.5"D** (within ½" on every dimension)

**2. Nexera Alegria 5606 6-Drawer — nearest alternative, slightly bigger everywhere**
- **48.13"W x 17"D x 28.38"H** — 1.5" deeper and 1.4" taller than the slot
- Metal glides, 1"-thick top, 5-year warranty, made in Canada, Natural Maple
- ~**$259 USD** at US resellers; carried by Home Depot Canada (SKU 1000803331) — **price not published on
  the page, confirm at the store**. Reviews are harsher than the Prepac's (laminate peeling, drawers binding)
- Take this only if the extra 1.5" of depth is genuinely available

**3. Ruled out — Canadian Tire "Tvilum Portland 6-Drawer Dresser"**
**56.34"W x 26.89"H x 12.46"D.** That is **8.3" too wide** and 4" too shallow. It is the 6-drawer that comes
up first at Canadian Tire and it will not fit.

**IKEA has nothing at this size.** Its 6-drawer units are 80 cm (31.5"), 108 cm (42.5") or 146 cm (57.5")
wide. There is no 120 cm / 48" 6-drawer in the range.

## Will it get in — I did the geometry so you don't have to measure
The unit carried **on its edge** presents a **16" x 27"** profile and is 48" long front-to-back.
- A standard interior door has ~29.5" of clear width and 78" of height. **16" x 27" passes with 13" to spare.**
  It also passes a 28" doorway.
- Turning a rigid 48" length through a 90° hallway corner: the maximum turnable length is
  `(a^(2/3) + b^(2/3))^(1.5)`. At a 30" hall that is **84.9"**, at 36" it is **101.8"** — both far longer
  than 48".
- Solving backwards, a 48" length needs a hallway only **17" wide** to turn the corner.
- The 48" width only becomes a constraint if you try to carry it **flat**, which you cannot do through any
  door in the house anyway — so carry it on its edge, styrofoam corners kept on.

**Conclusion: no doorway or stair measurement is needed.** Any real GTA house path takes this.

## What does still matter
- **The floor space in front of the chest** — drawers at 13.5" travel need ~14" of pull room; if the bed or
  a door swing is inside that, the piece is unusable no matter how well it fits the slot.
- **Assembly is 2-3 hours** and these units must be **anchored to the wall** — Prepac ships a tipping
  restraint and it is not optional with two young kids in the house.
