← Dell deliverablesOntario licence plate renewal — the 2026 rules, and the one real risk (23 Oct 2026)
The rules, straight from ServiceOntario (page updated 29 Mar 2026)
- Plates auto-renew 90 days before expiry if the vehicle is eligible.
- Auto-renewal gives 1 year of validity, no fee, and no sticker. Law enforcement sees the renewal instantly.
- Eligibility requires all three: valid insurance, no defaulted driver fines/fees, no outstanding vehicle fines, penalties or tolls.
- If not eligible, ServiceOntario contacts you at 90, 45 and 10 days before expiry (text/email/phone if signed up, otherwise a mailed letter), then again 72 hours after expiry. You must then fix the issue and renew manually online or in person.
- Auto-renewal covers passenger vehicles, light commercial under 3,000 kg, motorcycles, mopeds. It does not cover commercial/business vehicles, motorhomes, vehicles built before 1983, buses, school buses, snowmobiles.

What this means for the three vehicles
- Honda Odyssey 2020, Lexus NX 2017, and the Rogue all auto-renew for free. There is nothing to buy and no sticker to apply. The only work is making sure nothing silently disqualifies them.
- The single most likely disqualifier in this household is the Rogue: its insurance is being changed to fire-and-theft only (see rogue_fire_theft_only_insurance.md). If the policy is suspended under OPCF 16, the plate must be surrendered and it will not auto-renew. Normal for a car being sold as-is — just don't expect the plate to stay valid.
- Second most likely: an unpaid 407 ETR or city parking fine attached to a plate — any of the three. Those block auto-renewal silently and the only notice is the letter.
The 5-minute check that replaces the whole task
Check status online at ServiceOntario "Check your licence plate expiry date" for all three plates — it returns valid/expired without logging in for passenger vehicles. Do it once now and diarise the renewal months:
- Renewal month for a vehicle = 90 days before its current expiry, which is on the green permit (vehicle registration) for each car.
If a plate has already lapsed
Renewal is still possible online or in person after paying fines/tolls and confirming insurance — there is no penalty for a lapsed plate beyond the legal problem of driving an unplated vehicle, which is the real cost.
What I'd flag as the actual risk here
Not fees — there are none. The risk is driving a vehicle whose plate auto-renewal silently failed because of a fine or because the Rogue's insurance changed. That is a Highway Traffic Act offence and an insurance problem at the moment of a claim, not a paperwork problem.
Blocker
The three plate numbers and their current expiry dates (green permits). With those I can build a single renewal calendar with the 90-day auto-renew dates and the 45/10-day checkpoints, so nothing relies on a mailed letter.
